The Danish Seamen’s Church in Singapore:
The Danish Seamen’s Church in Singapore (DSCS) was founded in 1984, as a branch of the Danish Seamen’s Church in Foreign Ports and as part of the Danish Evangelical Lutheran National Church. Jauary 2004 it became a new organisation DSUK, Danish Seamens Church Abroad
DSCS is a non-profit organization that relies mainly on voluntary contributions from private sources in Denmark and Singapore. Additional income is created through bazaars, lotteries and other fund raising activities.
The objective of DSCS is “to provide church services, ministrations and spiritual and practical assistance to residents in and seafarers and other visitors to Singapore, all of whom shall be of Danish nationality”.
In other words, the Port Chaplain and his assistants will provide church services, visit ships, and try to create a “home away from home” for all Danes in Singapore, including a library with Danish Newspapers and magazines, coffee mornings, parties, provision of Danish sweets and delicatessen, and support in any way. There is a Danish school class and a Danish playgroup meeting weekly.
The Daily running of DSCS is the responsibility of the resident Port Chaplain. He takes instructions from and reports to the Danish Seaman’s Church in Foreign Ports, DK, and he is counseled by the Church Committee. The Church Committee consists of 12 members who are elected annually among Danish residents in Singapore. The Management of DSCS is vested in a general meeting held annually.
The church is open daily between 1 PM and 6 PM. Closed on Friday.

International Seamen's Centre, Tanjung Pelepas:
On the opening of the International Seamen’s Centre in Tanjung Pelepas, Mr. Ib Fruergaard, Managing Director of A.P.Moller Singapore, wrote the following:
"Following Maersk Sealand’s relocation of the majority of its activities from Singapore to Tanjung Pelepas in 2001, it became apparent that the seafarers onboard our vessels calling Tanjung Pelepas terminal needed a place to relax during their short port stays.
Considering that the nearest city, Johor Bahru, is situated 35 kilometers from the terminal, The A.P. Møller Foundation donated the necessary funds required to establish a branch of the Danish Seamen’s Church in Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia."
The centre was officially inaugurated on Sunday 9th of February 2003, but due to the SARS outbreak it was a rather quiet start with very few visitors. Luckily the club is now up and running. In 2004 the centre was visited by more than 6.000 guests of more than 42 nationalities.
The International Seamen’s Centre is built as a traditional Malay wooden bungalow – fully equipped with telephones, internet access, pool table, newspapers/magazines. Inside the building visitors can relax at the bar counter, in the cosy lounge areas, on a covered balcony or on the open air terrace.
The centre is open to all seafarers, irrespective of their employer, nationality, religion and ethnic background. The centre is easily accessible from the berths, as shuttle buses operates 24 hours a day.
We welcome you all to visit and enjoy the facilities at The International Seamen’s Centre, Tanjung Pelepas, Malaysia or as we say in Malaysia: SALAM MESRA DARI TANJUNG PELEPAS!
